The first affordable homes at a major new development in Gorton have been handed over to Great Places, marking a significant milestone for the Mellands Park scheme.

Kellen Homes has completed the first phase of new properties as part of the 303-home mixed‑tenure development on Mount Road, which will also include a new youth, community and sporting hub for local residents.

Local councillors Abid Chohan and Suzanne Richards joined teams from Kellen Homes and Great Places to celebrate the handing over of the first keys and to see the quality of the completed homes.

The wider scheme is being delivered in partnership with Kellen Homes, Greater Manchester Youth Federation (GMYF), Great Places, Sigma Capital Group and Centrepoint.

Speaking at the handover, Cllr Chohan said:

“This community needs new, quality houses and we are very happy to see the plans start to come to life as these Great Places affordable homes are completed and handed over.”

Cllr Richards added:

“This development not only delivers much needed new homes but also sporting and community facilities which have been designed in partnership with local young people.”

Nick Gornall, our Director of Growth, said:

“It’s great to see our first homes at Mellands Park handed over. This milestone reflects the strength of our partnership with Kellen Homes and our shared commitment to providing high-quality, affordable homes for the Gorton community. We’re proud to support the creation of a sustainable neighbourhood with new homes and facilities that will benefit local people for years to come.”

Laura Moreland, Head of Land and Partnerships at Kellen Homes, added:

“Mellands Park is an important new neighbourhood for the Gorton area, and these first affordable homes are the results of our strong partnership with Great Places.  It is a genuine pleasure to see these homes completed and handed over ready for residents to move in.”

Great Places will offer 60 affordable homes for shared ownership and social rent as part of the development. Of the 303 new properties being built, 36 will be independent living apartments for 16‑ to 25‑year‑olds leaving care, managed by youth homelessness charity Centrepoint. A further 207 homes will be available for private rent through Sigma Capital Group under their Simple Life brand.

Alongside the new homes, GMYF will deliver major new sports and community facilities at Mellands Park, including two full‑size grass football pitches, a combined netball and basketball court and a new youth and community hub. The facilities will primarily support local grassroots football teams and GMYF‑affiliated clubs.
